Torsa Renovables<\/strong>, in collaboration with the Department of Animal Biology at the University of M\u00e1laga (UMA)<\/strong> and through its Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI)<\/strong>, is currently developing a pioneering R&D project in Andalusia aimed at preventing bird collisions with wind turbines in existing wind farms across the region.<\/p>\n

The project was presented by Adelaida de la Calle<\/strong>, Rector of the University of M\u00e1laga, accompanied by Mariano Barroso<\/strong>, President of Torsa, and Mario Vargas<\/strong>, head of the Department of Animal Biology at UMA.<\/p>\n

All three emphasized the project\u2019s importance as a step forward in environmental responsibility<\/strong>\u2014highlighting that it is not only about promoting renewable energy, but also about ensuring it does not result in collateral environmental damage.<\/p>\n

Deterring Birds<\/h3>\n

The research project focuses on developing innovative technology<\/strong> that integrates all necessary detection devices into a single system capable of autonomously reacting to potential collision risks. The system can either trigger a smart shutdown<\/strong> of the turbines or activate deterrent mechanisms<\/strong> to keep birds away from danger zones.<\/p>\n

The outcome of this project, expected to conclude within one year, will enable the creation of a service-oriented company<\/strong> tasked with delivering comprehensive solutions to eliminate bird collisions in wind farms.<\/p>\n

Plans also include the construction of a technology production center<\/strong> at the Andalusian Technology Park (PTA)<\/strong> in M\u00e1laga, where the devices designed for this purpose will be manufactured\u2014giving the company its own in-house production capacity.<\/p>\n

In this aspect, Torsa Renovables<\/strong> will work with DeTect Inc.<\/strong>, a US-based company that supplies one of the world\u2019s most advanced bird detection systems. DeTect\u2019s equipment is used by NASA<\/strong>, the U.S. Department of Defense<\/strong>, and other leading scientific and technological institutions worldwide.<\/p>\n

Environmental organizations and associations have already expressed interest in and support for the project.
