Human exposure monitor to vibrations

The TORSA vibration monitor is a system for measuring and evaluating the vibrations to which vehicle operators in mining operations are exposed, and serves as a tool for preventing occupational risks, allowing a reduction in the number of possible injuries that could result from their daily activity.

During the workday, an operator is exposed to numerous vibrations from the various vehicle-related tasks performed in the mining operation (transport, loading, hauling of materials, etc.). These vibrations can be harmful to the human body and can lead to injuries of varying severity.

The TORSA vibration monitor allows real-time analysis of human exposure to vibrations and is able to immediately alert when safety levels established by international regulations (UNE ISO 8041 / ISO 2631-1) are exceeded.

Vibration data is collected by a sensor cushion located on the operator’s seat. This information is sent in real time to the communications unit and from there to a server where the information is centralized for visualization through the platform TORSA Cloud, thereby ensuring the correct interaction, operation, and technical management of information for all our clients.

By complying with international regulations and featuring a unique ISO 8041 compliance certificate for each manufactured system, this data can be considered complete and valid for any type of audit or legal proceeding. This certification is carried out by an external and ENAC-accredited laboratory.

Benefits and increased productivity

Following the development and deployment of the TORSA vibration monitor system across the mining operation’s vehicle fleet, the following benefits have been observed for the various mining areas:

Reduction of operator injuries: By monitoring vibrations in real time and on a continuous basis, situations reported as severe injuries or “whiplash” can be analyzed, allowing for prevention training to be provided to operators who require it.

Haul road condition analysis: By applying vibration fusion algorithms to the integrated GPS coordinates, heat maps of the mining operation are generated showing the real-time condition of the haul roads as a tool for the maintenance department.

Technical characteristics

  1. Real-time monitoring of vibration exposure in each of the vehicle fleet operators.
  2. System with configurable network properties adaptable to any existing type. Data integration is possible on a cloud server thanks to 3G/GPRS technology.
  3. Built-in internal GPS for real-time fleet management and generation of vibration hot maps throughout the mining operation.
  4. Built-in inclinometer for identifying vibration events due to braking on inclines. Real-time generation of incline, speed, and vibration graphs.
  5. Connecting vehicles via CAN Bus to obtain telemetry data and remotely monitor their indicators.
  6. Integration of all data into a single TORSA Cloud management platform, based on user profiles and groups.
  7. Configurable safety thresholds (RMS, VDV, MTVV, Daily Dose, etc.) and real-time alert system.
  8. ISO 8041 certified system. Each manufactured system has a unique associated certificate.
  9. Identification of events known as “whiplash” caused during loading operations between the shovels and the trucks being loaded.
