The presentations were led by Ignacio Cariñena, TORSA’s representative in Peru, who explained the features and functioning of the innovative systems.
The first presentation focused on a high-precision proximity alert system designed to prevent collisions during loading operations. This system is already in use at Antamina, as part of a collaboration that began in 2015. The system informs machine operators of the type, position, and distance of nearby vehicles or objects with centimetre-level accuracy, using a precise combination of LIDAR, GPS, and RFID technologies and proprietary protocols developed by TORSA, tailored to the specific conditions of mining operations.
Beyond significantly enhancing accident prevention, the system also offers a powerful productivity improvement tool through the use of identification tags installed across the mine’s fleet.
The second presentation introduced a pioneering vibration monitoring and analysis system for vehicles used in mining operations. This system enables the real-time measurement and evaluation of the vibrations to which vehicle operators are exposed during daily mining activities. It is a precise tool for occupational risk prevention, helping to reduce the incidence of injuries caused by repetitive exposure to vibration.
By alerting operators in real time about vibration levels—based on the ISO 2631-1 international standard—the system plays a crucial role in preventing chronic injuries. Moreover, it associates vibration data with GPS coordinates, enabling the creation of heat maps that highlight areas of the mine requiring road maintenance. As such, the vibration monitor not only improves occupational health but also contributes to operational cost savings.
