The Malaga-based company Torsa has patented the first device certified by an independent laboratory for the disinfection of coronavirus in the logistics and goods distribution sector. The system, named Pyros, was designed at the request of one of the largest pharmaceutical product distributors in Spain and has already been tested, confirming its ability to eliminate coronavirus in less than one second in a completely uniform manner on all types of objects, packaging, and transport containers used in the logistics industry through the application of hot air flow.
Pyros features a tunnel-type chamber through which objects pass on a conveyor belt and are exposed to a flow of air at a specific temperature that impacts the entire surface of the product, instantly and completely destroying any type of virus or pathogen. “It’s similar to an oven, but equipped with compressed air to ensure that the airflow reaches every crevice,” explains Torsa’s general manager, Mariano Barroso, who notes that the biggest challenge was “finding a system that could disinfect objects without halting the logistics chain.” Initially, ultraviolet light was considered, but it requires longer exposure times and may pose certain health risks for workers.
Using pre-programmed algorithms, the system calculates the precise amount of air required depending on the specific characteristics of each object. The precision of the device developed by Torsa ensures the virus is eliminated without the heat affecting either the packaging or its contents, as there is no significant thermal transfer between the object’s surface and its interior.
The system, although originally designed for a specific client, is adaptable to the needs of any logistics industry. It eliminates Covid-19 with just one second of exposure to the hot air flow—an essential feature for disinfecting large volumes of units in the shortest possible time.
During the certification process, Torsa collaborated with Microal, a company specialized in microbiological studies and accredited by ENAC, to conduct lab tests and suggest improvements to the initial prototype. A team composed of product development engineers and virus specialists was assembled. For the certification, objects were inoculated with Covid-19 and various bacteria, and after passing through Pyros, 100% of the virus was eliminated in less than one second.
Torsa’s president, Mariano Barroso (father of the general manager, who shares his name), emphasizes: “As a company, we are extremely proud to introduce a pioneering technological solution that prevents the spread of coronavirus through mass-distributed objects. We’re proud to contribute to public health safety and to help combat this devastating pandemic.”
Innovation experience
Torsa is a spanish company headquartered in Malaga, specialized in the design and manufacture of equipment and technological systems for the mining sector and the pharmaceutical logistics industry, as well as in the development and management of renewable energy facilities. Torsa’s products and solutions are present not only in Spain but also in Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Peru. The company generates an annual turnover of 1.5 million euros and employs 25 people.
In the renewable energy sector, Torsa has a division that has been developing, promoting, constructing, and managing clean energy installations for over 20 years—especially wind energy, in which it is a pioneer in Spain, and photovoltaic solar energy.
